在被 HUAC ( 国会反美行动调查委员会 House Un - American Activities Committee ) 指控的那段日子里, Pete Seeger 经常在为大学生举办的演唱会上为大家演唱一首古老的民歌.  此歌的前两小节写于1850年, 是一位名叫安尼·沃纳 ( Anne Warner )的人所写, 她因持不同政见而被关进了监狱, 此歌的作曲者是一位名叫劳瑞 ( Lowry ) 的牧师, 后来一位名叫多丽丝·普伦 ( Doris Plenn ) 的人在麦卡锡主义盛行时又为这首歌加上了第三小节, 遂成今天这个版本 —— How Can I Keep From Singing.
