这首《HAZARD（the river）》是Richard Marx根据一个很凄凉的故事改编而成的，在内布拉斯加州（Nebraska）的一个小村庄里，有一个私生子，没有人知道他的父亲是谁，他母亲坚强地把他生下来，并教育他坚强而仁爱地面对生活。可是当他7岁的时候，他母亲死于一种奇怪的疾病，他从此成了孤儿。所有的人都说他是一个孽种，充满了危险（hazard），没有人愿意接近他。从7岁开始，他种地、捕渔、打猎，独立的成长，可是他不孤独，一草一木一虫一兽都是他的朋友，他热爱生活，乐善好施，不在意那些世俗的偏见。在一次捕渔的时候，他救起了落水的女子Mary，从此，他们顶着偏见、谣传和流言深深相爱。他们每天傍晚手牵手沿着河散步，一起看落日，一起憧憬未来。可是直到那天，他出门赴约的时候，被Mary的亲戚朋友拦住，并把他打伤。而Mary不知道，一个人沿着河边走，不慎失足被河水冲走了。这次没有人来打救。 Richard Marx根据这个故事，填词作曲创作了这首《HAZARD（the river）》，歌曲忧伤深邃，充满了对美好生活的向往……
