出生于美國密歇根州，原名史提夫蘭·莫里斯。出生後不久因保溫箱內氧氣過量的醫療事故而失明。史提夫汪達在4歲學會吹口琴，5歲開始學鋼琴，11歲就會演奏10多種樂器，他還生就一副好嗓子，對音樂有著天生的領悟與駕馭能力，1961年，年僅11歲的音樂神童被汽車城唱片發掘成爲簽約歌手，1963年以“小史提夫·汪達”(Little Stevie Wonder)的名字憑一曲《指尖(Fingertip)》，向人們轉了雙目失明的人如何用指尖來感受世界的感覺，令人爲之驚歎，此曲高居美國排行榜榜首達3周,轟動全美，史提夫·汪達一舉成名。同年，他的專輯《12歲天才(12YearsOldGenius)》再度奪冠。60年代中期開始，史提夫佳作叠出，其中絕大部分是情歌，如表達純真愛情的《我是如此愛她(I Was Made To Love Her)》、《Never Had A Dream Come Ture》超凡的音樂才華讓史提夫·汪達15歲前就成爲全美家喻戶曉的知名歌手。
